The founding of Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery in 1968 marked the beginning of a forum for contemporary art that over the years has presented a great number of artists.
Founded in 1996, ShanghART Gallery is one of the first contemporary art galleries established in China and, for the past twenty years, has been devoted to the development of Chinese contemporary art.
Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle is showing in cooperation with ShanghART the works of the Chinese painter Ding Yi. He was one of the first abstract painters in China to turn his back on traditional painting in the early 1980s and find his own non-objective forms. Since 1988, he has concentrated exclusively on crosses, first in ink on paper, then in painting on canvas or on other painting grounds. The cross is for Ding Yi a symbol of the greatest possible precision that at the same time seems to negate the possibility of individual expression. The classical symbols “+” and “x” are the exclusive motifs of his paintings whose multiple, superimposed picture levels gain depth only through the arrangement and superimposition of the crosses. The title of many of his works is Appearance of Crosses.
