In Gregor Hildebrandt’s performance at the Ludwig Beck department store in Munich, painting becomes a performative act intrinsically associated with the ironic self-staging of the artist. His inspiration came from a 1971 video by French artist Georges Matthieu. Niklas Maak (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) has written that in Hildebrandt’s videotape works and performances “the empiric gesture of abstract expressionism and the mad acceleration of events collide with infinitely endless time to the images stored in the video tapes.” The Munich band PAAR is accompanying Hildebrandt’s new performance. They have released their album on Grzegorzki Records, the music label of Gregor Hildebrandt and Alicja Kwade.
